Why are Filipinos Paying More for Slow Internet?

Weeks ago, there is a news article about Susan
Crawford explaining why people in the United States are paying way more expensive internet
connection and getting slower speeds compared to other countries globally. Being curious,
I started comparing how much Filipinos pay for their internet? What I found out got me
thinking: Why are Filipinos paying more for slow internet?
Here’s what I did: I listed several internet service providers and their plans here in
the Philippines and compared them to the ones in the United States. Then, I compared the
cheapest price for their respective speeds and figured out what country pays less for
their internet. For the basic speeds, pretty much we’re
the same, for example, Globe Tatoo’s 2Mbps plan costs P1229 pesos, an in the United States,
AT&T and Time Warner offer 3Mbps for almost the same price. But then here’s where everything gets weird.
3Mbps costs around P2 to 3 thousand pesos here in the Philippines, but with the same
price point, in the United States, you can get speeds from 20 to 50 mbps.
The fastest internet speed that you can get here in the philippines?. It’s just up to
16mbps and you need to pay P6,000 to SkyBroadband for it. There’s actually nothing that costs
that much in the United States, and the most expensive one, is just for $90 P3,663 from
Comcast, and it already gives you speeds up to 105megabits per second. So basically that’s twice the price for
an internet speed that’s more than 6 times slower. But PLDT, Sky Broadband, and Globe Tattoo
all offer 100 megabits per second if that’s what you’re asking, but to get the service,
you gonna need P20,000 pesos per month. And good luck getting it, as they are only available
on limited villages and housing communities. But let’s move on to cellular data. It’s
a much better landscape compared to wired internet, all of our major carriers offer
unlimited internet for around 1 thousand pesos a month, where in the United States, it’s
more than $70 dollars a month, and for AT&T and Verizon, the biggest wireless networks
in the US, actually do not offer unlimited internet at all. But then there’s Long Term Evolution, or
what you’ve heard from advertisments call it LTE, where it gives you much faster data
speeds wirelessly. LTE can provide speeds up to 100mbps but what we are seeing right
now ranges from 20 to 42 mbps. We are pretty much beaten by US networks when
it comes to LTE, With Verizon, AT&T and Sprint Continually growing their LTE footprint. In
the Philippines though, Smart and Globe already launched their LTE networks, Smart had deployed
several LTE sites in some areas in 25 provinces, while Globe is trailing way behind. So even though unlimited internet is fairly
cheap, you are more likely to experience slow internet speeds from your phone, except maybe
if you’re in Metro Manila. I actually just have an EDGE connection where I live with
Smart. So, I know what you’re thinking. Why are
we getting slow internet for an expensive price? Well I don’t know.
I actually emailed this concern to the Philippine National Tellecommunications Commission (NTC)
for answers. And until they get back to me,, what we can
do is just guess why. The most prevailing theory that I can think of is that our internet
service providers lack competition. Maybe except for Metro Manila, there are just two
or three internet providers in a specific area or maybe even less. It’s even worse with
Fiber-optic access, where in their current state, they’re pretty much nonexistent. But then let’s look at our mobile lanscape
— PLDT owns Smart, Talk & Text, and Sun Cellular, and their only competition in this market
is Globe. And yet, our mobile services specifically with text messaging is still incredibly cheap.
Maybe there’s just no demand for high speed internet access here in the Philippines. Let’s look at another possibility: Maybe,
our ISP’s are unregulated. Unlike wireless communication being viewed as a necessity
by our government, fast internet connection might be not, that’s why they’re allowing
these ISP’s to charge ridiculous amounts for fast internet access. Let’s hold on for a second and let’s think
about the ISP’s for a second. Maybe it’s harder to implement high speed internet access here
in the Philippines than any other countries. Because for one, we are composed of thousands
of islands, that’s why building towers and connecting wires underground or under water
can be very difficult and very expensive. We are also being ravaged by yearly tropical
storms and flooding that’s why maintenance and repair can be difficult and expensive
too. But I want you to think about this: the minimum
salary of every American per hour is higher than the minimum pay for a Filipino a day.
And the prices for our internet connection is more expensive than what a typical American
is paying. Something is definitely wrong there. And the only question left is: What are we
going to do about it??? __ ____ __ __ __ __ _ ___
___ ___ ___ ___ __ ___ _ ___ ____ _____ ____

  4. Nag like ako kasi tama ka naman. Ma pera lang talaga ang pilipino kaya gusto nila nang masmataas na bayad para sa mataas na mbps pero 1 MONTH LANG! PWEDE BANG 2-3 MONTHS?!

  5. Bcoz of greed bcoz 2 giant telcos abuse its power to corrupt.govt playing blind against the 2 companies. There is no option until Converge came into the picture bringing 25mbps download and upload speeds consistently. Shame on pldt and globe a new company beats the corrupt companies. Converge is getting better reaching out and expanding to provide true and honest service to consumers. There is also a new player to challenge pldt and globe hope it stays true to its promises to give better service

  6. Update for PLDT HOME FIBR for 12-28-18
    5mbps – $24
    15mbps – $32
    25mbps – $36
    50mbps – $55

These plans are unlimited they also have speed plans which are much faster but with data cap.

They also offer Google Wifi Plans with unlimited fibr, 3 google wifi points, free landline wuth unlimited mobile calls
    30mbps – $44
    60mbps – $63
    120mbps – $82
    250mbps – $121

Is it too expensive compared to other countries?

  7. No, the fastest MBPS is 25 MBPS. And the wifi is Converge Fiber X for gaming.

But the fastest wifi in the world is singapore lol.

  8. I'm from Bangladesh, and I paying 10$ for 35mbps. by the way my isp is great but my friends paying almost same for just 2-3 mbps

  9. Wow america internet so fast with a bit low price

oh my god Roblox has a expensive to buy robux over 10.000 to buy with the damn 25.000 shiiiit

  10. Because internet providers in this country are all bunch of shits and people don't have any other choice but to use their stupid internet service..

  11. FUCK Pldt. FUCK every single fucking person who works there.

We pay for fucking internet and what do these shitheads give us? NOTHING!

They say “our wifi is for game”

Gaming? That’s a fucking joke! I get about 100 ping each single game.

  12. PLDT says you can get more than 5MBPS for lots of money, but NORMALY its just 200KBPS for an ENTIRE DAY or even WEEKS and they STILL EXPECT THEIR CUSTOMERS TO PAY FULLPRICE + "REPAIRS" BULLSHIT

  13. Umm sir the demand of fast internet in Philippine is very high
All these telecom companies are stupid and they only think getting money for their customers
allow foreign telecom company go to the Philippine to get rid of the stupid services of pldt and globe

  14. Actually, the best internet in the philippines is converge fiber, it has 500 mbps as highest and its unlimited it starts at 1,300php im just a filipino speaking english.

  15. Me as a Pinoy gamer hurts so much having slow internet especially me when I play Fortnite. Its nearly impossible to get 0 ping in the Philippines. Im having such a disadvantage, my enemies get like 10 ping meanwhile Im here having 50-200 ping with 10+% packet loss 🙂

  16. Im here to makes a survey how exactly the internet data usages cost. My love says before, it's an expensive and lower gb plus slow connection. Than, when Im watching this explanation, probably she's right about this. Here in Malaysia, I'm using a DIGI prepaid. When I need a high speed data, I just subscribe and the cost only RM1 for 24 hours. It's the same also when you need to watch a YouTube. Only RM1 for unlimited. 24 hours usage. Easy to say, you will experience the smartphone will drop onto your face. Well, I don't have any idea for Philippines. I'm just heard from my love. Cause I didn't ever step up my foot in Philippines. Maybe one day.

  17. Network providers in the Philippines dont really care about the speed of their Wifi, they just want to get paid to continue their worst service. Believe it or not, I have a standard PLDT Home DSL and It can even reach 1Mbps. Our Neighbor upgraded their wifi but they said it is still the same speed as before.

  18. Well we can’t do anything because no one cares!!!! Your complains leads you to being stupid you complain as much as you can but you don’t have a choice but pay their fucking rubbish slow internet service….

  19. Im literally watching this with a really slow internet, that’s why I don’t want to live here anymore and it’s really hot. So I guess its not fun in the Philippines

  20. I wanna leave this country as a 9 year old my parents cannot handle my anger.

ph you suck i hate you because slow internet

  21. Meanwhile in 2019, nothing changed. We're still stuck in the 20th century's internet here in the Philippines.

  22. This is my problem too i live here in philippines but i only get the maximum 4mbps

  23. If i can be ISP when i grow up maybe i will do it just maybe and i need money and fast internet too
    FASTERRRRRRRRRRRR

  24. If the us brings in their isp?
Woundt pldt and our other isp compete for th best choice?
Lack of competetion lack of performance

  25. Cause the goverment does not care for us and cares mostly for money but other people in the goverment care for us only a few

  26. OO BWISIT LANG ANG INTERNET SERVICE DITO SA PILIPINAS, KASI MGA BUGOK HAYOP MGA INTERNET NETWORKS PROVIDER, MALAKAS BAYAD PERO MAHINA ANG SIGNAL INTERNET VERY VERY SLOW AND IT Kills your enjoyment…DAPAT BUWAGIN AT PALITAN NG IBANG BANSA… dapat lang palitan kasi mga Ganid, manloloko at halos Pangungurakot ang ginagawa sa mga Customer nila dina makatao yan… internet nayan… KAYA DAPAT MERON MAMUHUNAN DITO NA IBANG NETWORK SERVICE PROVIDER… hindi na GLOBE- SMART- TM- SUNCELL AT ANO PANG INTERNET MERON SA PILIPINAS LASI WALANG KIWENTA AT SILBI MGA MANLOLOKO LANG SILA AT PANGUNGURAKOT STYLE GINAGAWA NILA… ginagago nila mga PILIPINO SA PILIPINAS…Sana magwakas na itong oaguugali nila na KASUKLAM- SUKLAM NA TALAGA…. ngayon na gumawa ng action ang GOBYERNO dahil sa BWISIT NA SERBISYO NG MGA INTERNET SERVICE NETWORK PROVIDERDITO SA PILIPINAS NAPUPUNA TULOY NG MGA TAGA IBANG BANSA MGA HAYOP NA ITONG GAHAMAN SA PERA… na wala sa Lugar naman sila.

  27. DAPAT MAMUHUNAN ANG IBANG BANSA DITO TUNGKOL SA INTERNET… KASI HAYOP BWISIT TALAGA SIGNAL DITO PILIPINAS TAPOS MAHAL PA ANG ANIMAL.,, nilalaro tayo ng mga INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER DITO MGA HUDAS AT PANGUNGURAKOT ANG ALAM LANG KASI… Dapat palitan na…

  28. They have make it only money but not good management services, ONLY BULLSHIT INTERNET WE HAVE IN PHILIPPINES THAT YOU CANNOT TRUST…

  29. It's been around 5 years since this video got uploaded. Well we have converge ict which their plans are better than its other counterparts. And for 1500php a month you could get 25Mbps. Unlimited data Whereas globe for the same price gives you 10Mbps and just 500GB data cap. And 5 years is a long time ago technology wise.

  30. This is why I keep getting shit connections from around the fucking world. Thx a lot pldt such a waste of money for slow ass connections

  31. This is the reason Marcos shouldn't have been impeached. The Philippines was once a powerhouse when he was still in power. While some people think he was a bad president. Well yes, he may have abused a lot of filipinos but don't forget he was the one whose project was to build almost all the bridges here in the ph. We were once a powerful country, now we are being left behind by even smaller countries such as singapore. Try comparing the land mass of the two yet how diffent they are from one another. The very root of all our problems rn is money. Those money-hungry politicians who only cares about money, they should be in jail. If Marcos wasn't impeached things would have been a lot different. Probably a more powerful and prospered PH. Damn…

  32. Yung BOBO yung gov't. Dapat mas pabilisin nila yung paggawa ng internet cell sites. Iincentivize.

Bakit? Kasi mahirap niyang gumawa ng cell sites. Smh :/

GLOBE, PLDT, Gobyerno, halos lahat na kurap.

  33. The situation in PH is similar to Brunei, we only have ‘two’ ISPs and we pay a lot for crap internet,

$100SGD for 20Mbps with 350GB quota (WE STILL HAVE FUCKING QUOTAS AND IT SUCKS!!!)

Also fuck you TelBru! I fucking wish Malaysian ISPs or even Singaporean ISPs could take over our telco infrastructure but no, the government doesn’t want to lose it’s monopoly over telco services here, literally the best infrastructure is given to government-run buildings.

  34. Telco companies here in PH are fucking greedy bastards, super expensive internet but super slow service.
the government doesn't give a shit either because they're in it, telco companies pay huge kickbacks to the govt , just to turn a blind eye for this dishonest and shitty service.

  35. The internet here is dogsh*t and duterte is not doing anything about it,It’s disgusting that the internet is even more expensive here than in America yet it’s slow and sh*t,even in metro Manila it’s still slower than a snail, the lack of competition isn’t an excuse for the the ISPs to charge
More for a slower internet, the ISPs are as*holes and greedy scums and they know it, so shame on them,
