Virginia Beach seeking input on school start times at community forums

(ANITA) FIRST AT ELEVEN. THE VIRGINIA BEACH SCHOOL DISTRICT WANTS TO HEAR FROM YOU ABOUT LATER SCHOOL START TIMES. THANKS FOR WATCHING. I’M ANITA BLANTON. (TOM) AND I’M TOM SCHAAD. BACK IN NOVEMBER THE SCHOOL BOARD VOTED TO PUSH BACK THE SCHOOL START TIMES TO IMPROVE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE FOR ADOLESCENTS. TONIGHT SCHOOL OFFICIALS PRESENTED THE COMMUNITY WITH FOUR DIFFERENT OPTIONS. GEENA AREVALO TELLS US THERE WAS A SMALL TURNOUT BUT STILL A LOT OF OPINIONS. (GEENA) TOM AND ANITA, BUT SOME OF THOSE IN THE MEETING SAID THEY DON’T WANT TO CHANGE START TIMES AT ALL AFTER SEEING WHAT’S BEING PROPOSED. 4:51 I FEEL LIKE THEY’RE NOT SOLVING THE PROBLEM, THEY’RE JUST MAKING THE PROBLEM FOR SOMEONE ELSE 4;55 THAT’S THE FEELING SOME PARENTS HAVE AFTER LEARNING MORE ABOUT POSSIBLE NEW START TIMES FOR VIRGINIA BEACH STUDENTS. THE DISTRICT HAS BEEN LOOKING INTO PUSHING BACK START TIMES SINCE 2015. THE GOAL IS TO ALLOW ADOLESCENTS MORE TIME TO SLEEP SO THEY CAN PERFORM BETTER IN SCHOOL. 52:26 THE FOUR OPTIONS THAT ARE ON THE TABLE REALLY GREW OUT OF A TRANSPORTATION STUDY 52:29 THAT THE SCHOOL DIVISION CONDUCTED IN 2016 50:31 THE DISTRICT ALSO CONDUCTED A SURVEY IN 2016 AND NEARLY 3/4 OF PARENTS, STUDENTS, TEACHERS AND OTHERS WHO PARTICIPATED SAID THEY SUPPORTED LATER START TIMES. 54;20 AS WERE GOING THROUGH THIS PROCESS I THINK IT’S IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THAT CHANGE TAKES TIME AND WORKING INTO CHANGE TAKES TIME 54:27 RIGHT NOW VIRGINIA BEACH IN HIGH SCHOOL START TIMES RANGES FROM 40 MINS BEFORE 8AM, MEANING THEIR DAY COULD GET STARTED 40 MINS EARLIER. :58 I THINK MY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CHILD NEEDS MORE SLEEP AS WELL 1:03 7:04 I THINK IT’S WRONG TO ASK A FIVE-YEAR-OLD SIX-YEAR-OLD TO BE AT A BUS STOP AT 6:45 AM, IT’S DARK IT’S COLD 7:12 ALL FOUR OPTIONS WOULD REQUIRE THE DISTRICT TO SPEND MONEY ON FIELD LIGHTING FOR HIGH SCHOOLS, AT LEAST 2.5 MILLION DOLLARS. OPTION D WOULD HAVE THE LEAST IMPACT ON TRANSPORTATION BUT IT WOULD BE THE MOST COSTLY, WITH 10 MILLION DOLLAR PRICE TAG FOR FIELD LIGHTS AT MIDDLE SCHOOLS TOO. 3:38 DO YOU THINK ADOLESCENTS NEED MORE SLEEP? SURE BUT ONCE YOU ACTUALLY SEE THE LOGISTICS IN AND HOW IT AFFECTS EVERYTHING, MAYBE YOU’D FEEL DIFFERENT 3:45 AND NOW THAT WE KNOW WHAT THE OPTIONS ARE, I WOULD LIKE AN OPTION TO IS YOUR MOST PREFERRED OPTION OF THOSE FOUR AND WHAT’S YOUR LEAST PREFERRED 52:52 AND WE’LL TAKE THAT DATA AND GO BACK TO THE BOARD IN LATE MAY 52:56 THE DISTRICT SAID THEY WANT YOUR FEEDBACK SO THEY HAVE A SURVEY WITH THE DIFFERENT OPTIONS. YOU CAN FIND A LINK TO THAT SURVEY ON OUR WEBSITE AT WAVY.COM. THE SURVEY WILL BE UP UNTIL MAY 15, SEPTEMBER. THE NEW SCHOOL TIMES WOULD GO INTO EFFECT SEPTEMBER 2020. GEENA AREVALO 10 ON YOUR SIDE (TOM) AGAIN – IF YOU COULDN’T MAKE IT OUT TONIGHT THE NEXT MEETING IS TOMORROW AT LANDSTOWN HIGH SCHOOL. THEN WEDNESDAY AT PLAZA MIDDLE SCHOOL. BOTH OF THOSE MEETINGS START AT 6:30. AND YOU CAN TAKE THE ONLINE SURVEY UNTIL WEDNESDAY, MAY 15TH
