Vanilla Forums: Sinking A Discussion

Vanilla Forums: Sinking A Discussion

Today I’d like to talk to you about a
feature that is unique to Vanilla Forums and it’s called sink. So what is “sink” and how does it work? Let’s take an example. You come into your community and you see an interesting thread so we have this one here. “I hate your 3d
modeling software…” So we go into the thread
and we see that obviously there’s been a back and forth.
There’s been a lot of discussion moderators and administrators have tried to resolve the issue but as you can see it’s not working and other people from the community might start to chime in and things might start to get out of hand. It’s just not going anywhere, but you don’t
want to close the discussion but you want the discussion to continue without others jumping in or causing a worse scenario. So what you can do? Rather than closing a discussion, you can actually choose to “sink” the discussion so you have the option to do actually
straight from here or from the discussion page. And as you can see, a yellow highlight quickly appears to confirm this. When you go to the recent
discussions you will see the discussion still here, and you of course, have the option once again to unsink or sink depending on how you feel, but as more
discussions go up or people add comments, the other
discussions will move ahead and regardless of people adding more
discussion to this original thread it’ll continue to sink to the botton. So let’s see it in action. Here we have this this discussion from
Sal. He is asking about new products coming We add a comment “New xyz coming” so what will happen is this comment by the nature of how Vanilla works, should be the most recent discussion which we know it will be. It will be on top
as you can see here and are sunk discussion has moved down.
Now normally what would happen if a new comment was added to a
thread, it should move up as well, but with sink, it continues to move down you. So even as I add a comment if you go to recent discussions, it’s still still stuck in the slot before we added the comment. So as other discussions move up it keeps exactly where it is and it’ll slowly sink to the bottom. This is a great option where you have a controversial topic where you what have the conversation
continue, but you don’t really want more people come and cause disruption in the community. Hopefully you found this video helpful “sink” is one of the features that is unique to Vanilla.
