Understanding Online Security Threats

– Hi I’m Emily, this is London
and in this video we’re gonna introduce you to some
online security threats you should be aware of. (lively music) – Knowing what security
threats are out there, will help you understand why
it’s important to have a good protection plan and some of
the tools that you’ll need. – Let’s talk about our first threat. Data theft. While most of the coverage in
the media focuses on security breaches at really large
companies, don’t think that you’re small business
can’t be a target too. – In fact, many hackers use
automated bots that scour the internet searching for
website vulnerabilities and trust me these bots don’t care whether your business is big or small. – And hackers aren’t the only
way these things can happen, data can be compromised through employee negligence or error,
like having a weak passwords or accepting a phishing attempt. – And in a phishing attack, the victim receives what
seems like a legitimate email, where they click on any links
or download any attachments and boom, their network’s infected. – Another common threat is
malware or malicious software, which simply put is any software written with the sole intent of doing harm to data, devices or people. – Yep and some are more
destructive than others, ranging from locking down your computer
and stealing your data, all the way up to the destruction
of your entire network. – Even worse, malware is sneaky. Sometimes it’s obvious when
you’re site is infected but others, it’s just lurking
around in the background not impacting performance
so you suspect nothing. – And there’s a wide variety
of malware out there. Like viruses, which infect your computer, deleting or corrupting files
or Trojan horses which open up back doors to your computer or network, allowing other malware in. – And let’s not forget
spyware which enables hackers to hide on your computer or network and they can record keystrokes, collecting things like passwords
or credit card numbers. – And new malware is being
created on the daily. Take ransomware for example,
which effectively locks you out of your computer,
holds you hostage until you pay the hackers demands. – Yes there’s more but
we thing you get it. Malware is serious stuff. The final security threat
we want to introduce is not as well known as malware but it can be equally as devastating. It’s called a distributed
denial-of-service or DDoS attack. – In a DDoS attack the hacker
floods a computer or network with fake requests in an
attempt to block legitimate requests from coming through. – The goal of the DDoS attack
is to make the computer or network unavailable to
visitors by temporarily or even indefinitely blocking it’s connection to the internet. – And these attacks can
rage from days to months, making it hard to impossible
to get to your website, meaning a loss in trust,
a loss in revenue, I mean, serious damage to your reputation. – These aren’t all the
security threats you need to be aware of, but they are
most common and they’re all preventable with the right
security plan in place. – I’m London and this is
Emily, thanks for watching. (lively music)
