Reducing Spam in Vanilla Forums

Reducing Spam in Vanilla Forums

Everyone hates form span and with a
vanilla community we have some tools to help you make sure
that spam is limited on your community today we’re gonna jump in and see three ways that a Vanilla helps you combat spam in your community first off let’s start with registration when you set up your registration if you set it as basic you automatically
have recaptcha included recaptcha basically is a way to make
sure someone is human they have two entered the numbers or
digits or a word to prove that they’re human once doing
so they are able to create an account so the first step is on registrations, so we
make sure that people are human register to use your community the
second way that we help you prevent standards from the called Akismet It may be something that you
might be aware if you’ve ever had a blog and because Vanilla has both comments
and community we use a kiss me to make sure that spam
is eliminated right away and all plans get it free Aksimet key to
block spam from entering their community. If you have your own key you
can enter it at any time by going to browse add-ons and clicking on settings for Akismet. And
finally the third way we have to help prevent spam is an add-on called stop
forum spam which you can get to from browse
add-ons and you can see here when you click Enable. This add-on
basically looks at other communities and other forums that have
reported spam and what you to do is click
Settings and as you can see here you can modify the settings so initially what you have is the default
settings which means that if an IP address has been reported five
times to StopForumSpam this user will be marked as spam right away and sent to the spam queue and then if the second option is twenty so at twenty IP’s
reported being bad it’ll be completely rejected
from your community. They won’t even be able to post to be blocked completely and then the second threshold is email so at this case if there are 20 email
addresses or the same email addresses reported twenty times to StopForumSpam the post will automatically be flagged
as spam and if the email has been reported fifty times they will
be completely rejected you are able to modify the settings at any
time and if you find that you are getting a lot of spam you can tighten this up by going to a very low number of course you have to be very careful
not to go too low because users may not be able to post anything on your
community there are some other ways to prevent spam which include having your community use Reactions which was shown it in an earlier video and outside the scope here, but basically what you do is by enabling Reactions, community members could vote on
content and if they find it to be spammy they could report it. There’s also the flagging option so
there are a lot of other ways that we help prevent spam but these are three
tools that are available to you to really
reduced spam. We hope you found this video helpful if you’re a host vanilla customer and
