Public Service Forum Highlights | #AFSCMEForum

Good morning and welcome. We need to hear from
the candidates directly. We want to know who they are
and what they care about. Even more importantly,
we want to make sure they know who we are
and what we care about. They need to understand
the importance of our work— and the importance of unions
and keeping public services strong. Without AFSCME, without public employees,
nothing functions. We could get rid of every
hedge fund manager in America and nothing would change. We get rid of public employees,
we’re in trouble. Everything that happens in the community
depends on you. Public employees are our neighbors,
you live in our neighborhoods, you take care of us whenever there’s a crisis— you’re the ones that take care of
it and day to day you change everything for us. I don’t believe that large corporations
should be making millions of dollars
by locking up fellow Americans. I believe I was one of the
very first national candidates to say that we must ban private prisons
and detention centers. You look at child care workers,
you look at home health care workers getting paid substandard wages to
perform that work that—if it’s not done we will actually not function
as a society. I’m in full support of those
child care workers organizing to receive the benefits and pay
they deserve. You know it’s it’s in
unions that we get the answer— over whether we’re gonna
care about racial equity or whether we’re gonna care about
economic kitchen table issues. Because I see a tremendously
diverse labor movement here. Because we’re talking
about our everyday lives and how we make them better
through policy, making sure we defend workers rights, get you the raise, preserve your health care,
get paid family leave— then it turns out that
most Americans can be united. My third brother John—when he
got out of the military he joined the union, and today he has a
pension because of that union. He reminds me every day:
unions built America’s middle class and unions will rebuild
America’s middle class.
