Private Internet Access | Personal PIA Review & Setup Tutorial for Computers / Phones

Hey folks, my name is Josh and we’re going
to spend a few minutes here talking about Private Internet Access. This particular time
is going to be broken into three different parts. First we have the review, second we’re
going to do a walkthrough of a computer setup and third we’re going to do a walkthrough
of the mobile setup so that you can know exactly what you’re getting into. You can jump to
any of those using the time markers you see right here. For now, let’s go ahead and jump
into our review. Alright, first of all, if you’re the kind
of person who knows they need a secure VPN but doesn’t care to understand the nuances
of encryption, OpenVPN, DNS and so on, Private Internet Access is probably going to appeal
to you. Of the numerous VPNs that I’ve tested, Private
Internet Access is by far the most simple that I’ve run across. It’s also one of the
cheapest. Their downloadable application is a great
example of this simplicity. Check it out. Other than your username and password, there
really aren’t many options you have to worry about. There are a few extra settings I can play
with when I click the connection button at the bottom — it’s a button that gives me
access to options like a VPN Kill Switch, Port Forwarding, connection type, etc — but
for most of you this will never be something you deal with. I also have the option to play with the encryption
settings, which again I don’t suggest you do unless you know what you’re doing. My main point, though, is that in default
mode, the Private Internet Access application is incredibly simple even if you’ve never
dealt with a VPN before. Just log in, click on the icon located in the upper-right hand
corner for Mac users, usually on the lower right hand corner for Windows users, and choose
your gateway. Ok, now for my pros and cons list. Let’s start
with what I really like about Private Internet Access. First of all, as you’ll see in the setup tutorial
coming up next, the installation process is unbelievably simple and fast. It took me less
than 5 minutes to get up and running. Second, they allow up to 5 simultaneous device
connections, which is a lot when you consider that most VPN services usually only allow
2 at a time. Third, Private Internet Access is a US-based
company, which means they have no requirements to log users IP and activity, which for those
of you who don’t know is a good thing because it keeps your activity completely anonymous. You can use pretty much every major credit
card as well as Paypal to sign up, but for those who want even more anonymity they give
you the option to pay with Bitcoin or for those less tech-savvy you can go out and buy
a gift card for Starbucks and pay with that. Seriously, I’ve never seen that before but
it’s pretty cool. Finally, and this is something that most reviews
of Private Internet Access get wrong, this company offers a 7-day refund. They don’t
publicize this offer but it is honored. Just email them if you’re not satisfied and they’ll
give you a refund within 7 days. That’s what I like about Private Internet
Access. Here’s what I was less impressed by: First, there are no native mobile apps, either
for iOS or Android. What this means for you is that setup on a mobile device is manual
and as you’ll see in my setup tutorial a bit difficult. While other VPN services offer
a simple download setup, this was pretty much unnecessarily hard. Second, while they do offer 10 difference
countries, for the most part you don’t have the option to connect to specific servers.
I feel like their target audience probably doesn’t care about that, but it’s something
worth noting. Finally, while simplicity is a great thing,
I did miss some of the options, bells and whistles I’ve become used to with other VPNs.
For instance, I wish there was more than just one plan available, I wish I could see my
upload/download speeds, I wish I had a few more settings options. You know, these are all minor complaints,
though. Overall, you really can’t beat the value that Private Internet Access provides,
especially if your primary goal is to get connected to a VPN as quickly as possible. Use the button you see here to check out their
pricing and other details that I don’t have time to cover here and then use the remainder
of this video to see how to setup Private Internet Access on your computer and your
mobile device. Ok, we’re here now on the computer setup part
of Private Internet Access. You can see that I’m on their homepage, I just clicked the
“Get Started Now” button and I’m going to scroll down – this is all in real time so
you can realize just how fast this is. I’m going to use their monthly plan. Click on
the “Buy Now” and then I want to use my Paypal account, even though they do offer Bitcoin,
a lot of different options for you. For me, the easiest thing is just going to be to use
my Paypal account. Quick and simple. I did mention before that they do allow you
to use gift cards which I thought was really interesting. They make it very simple, you
can use anything from Wal-Mart to Starbucks but like I said, I’m going to use Paypal. I’m getting here to the confirmation screen
where I’m going to click “Agree and Pay”. At this point they’re going to redirect me
back to one of their pages and I’m going to move back over here to my email account. As you can see here I’ve already received
a couple different emails from Paypal as well as three emails from Private Internet Access
including their installer links. So I’m using OSX, I’m going to click on their OSX installer.
Whether you’re using OSX or you’re using Windows you can click on those particular installer
buttons. And it’s going to install here as you can see happening at this moment. It’s
a pretty, relatively small file but once it finishes downloading I’m just going to click
to have it open up and then I’m going to unpack it. I’m going to install it here on my Mac. I’ve double-clicked here but you can see here
that it’s not opening because it says it’s from an “unidentified developer”. If this
happens to you, don’t worry. Just click “OK”, right click on the file and click “Open”.
That basically just tells your Mac that you know you want to open this particular file
and from Private Internet Access you can be assured that it’s going to be an ok file. So I’ve downloaded it here and I was actually
surprised to find that my username and password was already input into it so I wanted to double
check to make sure that it was actually my username and password. It is, which is really
cool. That means you don’t even have to worry about anything. Once you install it you just
click on the “Save” button and once you’ve clicked on the “Save” button I’m going to
go up for me on the Mac up in the upper-right hand corner of the window. For Windows users
it’s going to be the bottom-right and then I will connect to the server location that
I want to be on. And it’s that simple. Alright, and now welcome to the iOS setup
portion of this tutorial. I’m going to go back into my email where they sent me all
my login information. This is going to be important because the first thing I have to
do whenever I’m going to be setting up any sort of mobile device with Private Internet
Access is to login to my Client Control Panel using the information that they sent me in
my email. Then I need to go down to the bottom here. You’re going to see where they say that
you need to “generate or re-generate a username and password”. So I’m going to generate one
right here. Now I’m going to go ahead and show you everything because I’ve already regenerated
and what you see here wouldn’t work if you tried it on your own. I’ve got to take and
write down my username and password and then I’m going to go back into the settings file
of my iPad. I’m using my iPad here. Click on the “VPN” and then “Add a VPN Configuration”.
For Private Internet Access I’m going to use the L2TP and in the description I’m going
to type in “Private Internet Access”. You can actually put in anything you want, this
is really just for you to know. And then in the “Server” field I’m going to put in – I’m
in China right now, so I’m going to put in the closest server that I can which is in
California. So I’m going to do “us-california.privateinternetaccess.com”. For the account I’m going to put in exactly
what they told me to put in when I generated that password. It’s always going to start
with an “x”. It’s not going to start with a “p”. Mine is the “x1372249” and then they
gave me a password which I have to put in. You see the “RSA SecurID” – make sure that
that is off. And then in the “Secret” field that you see right below this I’m going to
put in “mysafety” – no spaces, no capital letters. This is something everybody’s going
to do the same of. I’m going to make sure that “Send All Traffic” is good and go ahead
and do that. Click on Private Internet Access and turn it on. Now for the sake of this tutorial I’m going
to go ahead and tell you that I did have some problems. The server did not respond here
and so what I had to do was I had to go into their website and use their online support.
I went in there and let them know that I was having some problems and the good news is
that they responded immediately. I can go on here…I could have sent in a support ticket
but here they were able to respond to me almost immediately. They did respond with canned
responses and I had to kinda configure what I wanted to understand but basically what
it came down to was I had to go into my Network Utility and I had to go actually lookup the
numerical address for my us-california. Hopefully this isn’t something you have to do but if
you have the same problem I do I just wanted to show you what I had to do. So I’m looking
this up and you see the numerical, the “50.23…”. I wrote that down and I’m going to go back
in to change the “us-california” to the numerical IP address. So once I put that in I’m going
to save it and turn on my VPN for the iPad and you’re going to notice once it connects
there’s going to be something in the upper left hand corner that says “VPN” and I am
good to go. It’s that simple. Again, thanks so much for watching and if
this review was helpful, give it a “thumbs up” or you can use the button here to access
the Private Internet Access website. Thanks so much!

  1. Hi it has not worked. I purchased it and it says i am somewhere else when i go to IP address and location it tells me I am somewhere in the USA but says THIS IS A PROXY ADDRESS…in big letters but at least it said this as I am in Europe so this was good but then i tried to get a movie to watch off Amazon DOT com and a pop up came up telling me i cannot watch a movie because i am not in the USA so IT DOES NOT WORK at least for watching movies and i tried a site that is sort of IFFY and forbidden to go to here where i live and THEY IT KNEW I WAS NOT IN THE USA and the site said something like NOT ALLOWED IN THIS COUNTRY as it does when i do NOT use anything. I have tested about 7 different ones and all the other ones i dont know if any of them were any good as they were to complicated for me to figure out how to configure this one is EASY to do for DUMMIES who are not good at configuring so OK i SPENT another $6.95 for this one for a month, and sure, it TELLS me that the program i just purchased for $6.95 is somehwere in the USA but i guess my REAL server knows that i am faking it, and so if you live in Germany at least and want NetFilx  and all the you tubes that are banned here and the US and UK TV shows and going to sort of…well unapproved websites according to the German govt that chooses sort of likie the Catholic Church a long time ago had a BLACK LIST of FORBIDDEN FILMS and if a Catholic were to watch that film there was a long list as well as books forbidden by GOD I guess or the pope or who ever runs the Vatican which i think is the scam artist  supposedly HOLY VIRGIN OLD FARTS who steal from the poor to give to themselves so THEN if you watched a film or read a book or magazine i guess you would for CERTAIN BURN IN HELL FOREVER because you had committed a MORTAL SIN meaning it was DeaDLY TO THE SOUL and you would well be better DEAD for yu would SUFFER FOREVER AND THINK about it…this group of fairies who put on DRESSES each morning and fornitcate little boys are the ones who made up all the rules and Germany  and everywhere else does the same thing and these scam proxy servers come along for such a huge market for the supposed privacy one CRAVES so if they want to go watch porno or lesbo or gay or god only knows whaat people are into no one will know as of now i know FOR CERTAIN that GOOGLE KNOWS when i will go use the toilet because Google knows me better than anyone or anythng for it keeps track of everything i do and it knows my little secrets itknows yours too if you some old dude and you go in for fucking little kids and take a trip to Bangkok it KNOWS if you are some REAL terrorist i do not beieve there are any REAL terrorists but IF there were other than the USA govt which pays off everyone who does their dirty work so they are protected but forget it if u just a private citizen or osme idiot who goes crazy and decides to do some horribe thing they will know it and so i say fuck the internet and curse all these pay proxy server companies they all fake and fuck hushmail for you know who starteed hushmail…the USA govt as they are the ones who started teh internet you think this is some gift from the heavens sure it is handy not to have to spend weeks and weeks in some library to find out a fact instead u can find out just abut anything in a blink of an eye. My cat fell out the window 3 floors up and she was ok but i googled FALLING CATS and WOW this was long time ago in i think 1999 and i couldnt believe there must have been like 20 pages on google or could have been yahoo cant remmeber all so interesting that is when i tought the internet was magic and so wonderful and it sort of was it was like the old west and most everything was free and privacy wasnt such an issue and you could go ot forums and chat rooms and you could take over a room it was  so fun i was feeling i was like some kid in grade school with whole class of other kiddies were all much older but man when we went to that chat room we had a blast we would tell some first time person to type in PENIS and they would and they would be thrown out of the room and everyone is screwaming and laughing i mean you culdnt hear them only in imaginatiuon and everybod rolling on the floor and this was because one of the cliques had figured out how to type PENIS which was one of the FORBIDDEN words we figured out how to skip some thing i forgot how we did it but all us old timers knew and we would get new peple tossed with several words and we would out people for being fake and sometimes in whisper i would forget to put myslef on whisper as others sometimes did and we would say something to whole room meant not for the whole room and god i can still feel myslef cringe hahaha so damn funny i would be so embarrased i would leave the pc as if this was real and i had said to one of my buddies there how i thought so and so was a real moron and it came out with him seeing it and whole room and this was hilarious. and god i guess this is way too long just the good old days when one person could be everyone in a chat room or an enemy could pretend to be your best friend and u go to whisper and you and they chat there then you figure pretty qucik by their STYLE they are not whom you thought they were and god that was awful but you could be EVERYONE i cannot remember i now suffer from Dementia i think thhen there was this monitor sort of like a teacher andshe would come in and say STOP ACTING LIKE LITTLE KIDS OR I WILL KICK YOU ALL OUT FOR FIVE MINUTES SO WE ALL LIKE little kids obeyed for a couple mintes then she was gone anad then we get all crazy again she comes back and shuts the room down fore half an hourthis was such a terrible punishment lololo but then she would let us all back those were fun days nowit isw all about getting scam spam in inbox and how u can make a million bucks in two daysw and so much greed and lies and other awful stuff before it was fun now i am wishing to figure out some way to HIRE someone to DO whaT I NEED done online and NEVER NEVER NEVER come online again and i thik there will be a huge market for this and a WHOLE INDUSTRY will arise and i dont know how much it will cost but it will be jobs for those people who are not only honchos but all people rich or almost broke who cant stand this total lack of privacy and are hating FB now and Linkedin for you cannot get a JOB anymore with ut FB and Linkedin and if you EVER made some moral error or some silly chidlish thing they will find it out and you wont get the job i hear that www.reputation.com charges something like $5 thousand dollars to erase of first 3 pages of Google anything about a person!!! Thata company must be owned by Google for google can do what google wants to do and some people get everthing taken off others they go shit on them going back a decade so i guess it is who you know to rid shit about u.

  2. Hey mate,

Just getting ready to move to China and your videos have been really helpful. I've spent the whole day just looking through different VPN's Vypervpn strongvpn astrill vpn . .  definitely going to look through all your videos to get some more insight into this.

  3. Hi,
Just letting you know private internet access definitely DOES have a app for Android and it works extremely well.
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.privateinternetaccess.android

  4. Dear Josh, It is sad to say but I have tried this VPN and it was not successful at all in China. First, it took me 3 days to install it because it had to be done all manually. Then afterwards it was very difficult to sign in. I kept trying to connect to several different locations and/or countries. Some days I spent many hours just trying to get connected. And finally, their client support did admit that they were having lots of problem with China. This VPN does not work for China.

  6. Looks easy to use and very simple which I like. Never seen the starbucks payment feature idea before myself! Thanks for posting, looks cool.

  7. A few things –
    1. "That's either a weird coincidence or you've been paid by someone to badmouth the competition." That's not a professional response, it's a biased response. Sounds like you'll stand for this group no matter what because it happens to be your favorite.
    2. An hour after I signed up based on your review, I cancelled my subscription. I've been using strongvpn and I'm dumping it because China now "has its number" I hoped this was a good alternative and it is already time to look for others.
    3. This whole setup and use is the most awkward of any vpn I've used or set up. I want to set up a vpn, put in the IP put in the password and log on. This setup feels like you need to have minored or maybe majored in I.T.
    4. I do have a connection through PIA – very very very very slow. I tried using west coast, Hong Kong and others and all internet speeds were the same. Sometimes it won't even load pages and just collapse. It can't even load the netflix welcome screen. How this ever made it on the list for being good in China is beyond me!
If anyone here is lucky to have made this work, then a big thumbs up. The fact you need to actually make a tutorial to get this working is a sign in and of itself. I figured I did something wrong, went back and did it your way and that worked even less, which means it totally stopped working. I realize your proud of this company but for anyone else reading this, keep looking. I don't know what company yet, but look elsewhere. And btw, if you want to say I was payed to bad mouth it also, then you actually have to look at whom I'm trying to elevate. Obviously there is not competition stealing here.

  8. can you use this with torrenting?  I use Transmission to download torrents and will this keep everything secure?  Also if it does work with transmission, what kind of speeds will i get?

  9. Thanks for the article  Chris .Why using a VPN when you can use a DNS service like UnoTelly? The DNS option is much faster and easier to use.

  10. Private Internet Access cannot access ABC! They acknowledge the problem but have no solution. ABC has been inaccessible for almost two months now. They have denied my partial refund request, despite the fact that they haven't provided the service which we would all expect (they are relying on their terms and conditions to say that they have no guarantees of anything… good for lawyers, but still not right).

  11. Thanks a million! I couldn't figure out why I couldn't connect on iOS. I did non have to punch in the IP address but after a few minutes I have it up and running

  12. Great Post! When I first signed up I got the icon on the top of my mac and everything worked fine. I logged off and tried to re access with no success. The Icon doe not show at the top. When I click on the Icon In applications It doesn't open or respond. Just wondering if you could help out Thanks.

  13. Good guide. Tested in Beijing and Shenzhen. L2TP works a little better than their client but both are often too slow for youtube or can't connect. Their SOCKS5 proxy will get errors like the "connection reset by peer 10054" error for connections to blocked sites.

  14. Just installed private internet access. I also have malwarebytes and I'm getting incessant malicious website warnings when vpn in inactive. Any idea why?

  15. What are the download speeds? I have a great internet connection and don't want to get this if it would take me back to the days of dial up. If it is slow what's another great VPN that doesn't store logs and has decent speeds? Thanks a lot!

  16. I got it and use it for a month, and it was a very disappointing experience.
The browsing speeds are maybe OK at best, BUT the download speeds are just ridiculously slow.
Trying to download a movie using a torrent became an exercise in patience which I don't have. Usually without PIA my average download speed would be at least 500 kbs, with PIA it never went above 50 kbs. Which meant downloading a 1 Giga file took about 3 hours. ABSURD!!.
I like to use eMule once in a while for old and dificult to get files, without PIA the download speed and the connection are very good; with PIA the connection was imposible to obtain, so bad that it could not even get rid of the firewall and because of this any file that was easily downloaded without PIA was imposible to get.
If anyone has a different experince with PIA and download speeds, please share it, I might be able to learn something. As it stands PIA to me was a waste of time and money.

  17. Thanks for the tutorial, hour later no login/pw.  Paypal confirmation was instant!   I'll let ya know how long it takes to get my login.  No emails from them thus far.

  18. This was very helpful, but I have a question. I own a small coffee shop with free wi-fi.  Unfortunately, people have been torrenting on our wi-fi and we may get shut down by our ISP.  Someone recommended that I set up PIA.  Is it possible to set it up so that everything that runs through the router is anonymized?   Also, we often have more than 5 customers at a time online, will 5 be our limit if it is set up as I described?  Thanks for your help.

  19. hey josh, just wondering if there is a way I can set this up on my home airport router so that any device connected to it is using a vpn, instead of having to set up each mobile device?

  20. Hey quick question I recently got an email from Comcast saying their throttling my data. I cant use it anymore. Im switching to at&t. My question is if i use pirate bay and trasmission will i ever get into trouble again thanks.

  21. Hi josh. I've got PIA, and pretty happy with it on my laptop and phone. However, I now need to configure a VPN on my router. Unfortunately PIAs tech support have been very unhelpful, and I can't figure out for the life of me how to get the VPN on to my dlink. Any advice??

  22. hey travel im really likin PIA because of its simplicity but the main reason for me to get a VPN is so i can torrent safely can this do the job? is there any more step i need to do to set it up so i can download torrents? i was doin research of airvpn (another great vpn) but its too complex for me, but they offer forward port for my bittorrent client( i dont even know what that is, but supposely is better for torrrenting. does this offer somethin like that, will pia be safe for leakage?(what ever that means) lol

    thanks a bunch

  23. PIA no longer works to access geo-restricted content like Netflix. I contacted them and they claim they ARE NOT working on a work around. STAY AWAY AT ALL COSTS!

  24. I'm interested in learning about some of the settings in the advanced tab, is there anyone you could help explain or point in the right direction?

  25. Hi, I don't even know how to access the settings screen you show at 1:00? Could you please help. Regards.

  26. I paid $6,95 only to see "YOU ARE NOT PROTECTED" at the top of my screen when i am on PIA's control panel! Nice !pay money then get nothing?

  27. I like your tutorial style a lot. Can you make one on how to install on Kodi which is not on a computer but a tv top box. Keep up the great tutorials, thanks..

  28. Excellent review! For the listeners out there who may not know much about VPN: you're not connecting to a VPN, you're actually "VPNing" to a proxy server.

  29. I will never use PIA vpn again.
the worst support ever it took hours to get a new password when mine changed for no reason.
they renewed my year subscription and billed my credit card without my knowledge i had planed to try another vpn.

  30. I liked the product but they falsely advertise a bit + once I cancelled the service (or attempted to) they still charged me $6.95 for 4 months until I contacted PAYPAL. Oh, and they wouldn't reply back to ANY of my emails.

  31. Thanks for the video. I'm using a Mac, and this is exactly what I needed to know before I pull the trigger on this VPN. Thanks!

  32. oh my god, you think this is simple or unbelievably easy? What are you talking about. Nothing has worked right FROM THE START. They sent me a user and pw that didn't work. They didn't mention the helpful YouTube video that still didn't help. Man they have a looooooooooong fucking way to go before you use terms like simple or easy.
TUNNELBEAR was easy but useless since you can't torrent.
I've installed as administrator. I can log in. I can generate a username. and that's where it all just stops.
    This process is miserable.

  33. This VPN is horrible. I just signed up, but i never received an email with a username or password. I wonder how long the customer service will take to refund my money..

  34. It's a scam I purchased this VPN and it didn't work on my Dell 2015 laptop. I did everything support told me to do in advanced setting nothing worked so I contacted them to get a refund because there service didn't work for me. So they emailed me back saying they cancelled my subscription but my account would remain open for the remainder of the period so I go and check to see if the account is still open and it wasn't. Hit the forgot password so I could reset it and I have yet to receive a email for password reset. I also contacted them about my refund again because they didn't say they were going to refund me just that the account would be canceled. I'm still waiting on a refund.

  35. wow nice tutorial sir..
sir i have a few question
    1. this is unlimited internet access?
2.Can i use it for business ( exp. some of my friends connect to my vpn via pass generator, folow up question it will affect the speed of the connection
    3.how to stop their connection.
    tnx and god bless

  36. PIA hasn't responded to any of my several support requests (same issue) over about 2 weeks. I'm very concerned that something has gone wrong with Private Internet Access. I'm certainly not satisfied with its support service. If PIA no longer offers support to individual requests, they should post a notice so that prospective customers can take that into consideration when deciding which VPN service to purchase.

  37. Sometimes there is no Private Internet Access icon on the toolbar. Ill open PIA and still nothing shows up. It eventually does pop up but I am not sure why it disappears and reappears on the tool bar. Anyone know about this issue?

  38. I tried to set mine up and I laid with my credit card. Charged my account 1 dollar then nothing else happened, also some error showed up

  39. Can somebody explain why PIA still connects and lets me use the net after my service was disconnected? yes I'm certain its turned off and I can even disconnect and reconnect again, how is this possible? I've had other VPN's that didn't do this and tails also works without the VPN and thats not even using my VPN. I'm puzzled

  40. So if someone had this they would be able to download something like movies illegally and not be caught?

  41. I have everything connected and stuff but I can’t connect to it to my Xbox one but it works on my 360 Xbox ??

  42. "Authentication Failed" wrong password error right off the bat, when all my info is correct. Not a good start at all.

  43. can i switch back and forth (from VPN to going back onto chrome to use my regular IP for example)? i just need the vpn for torrents

  44. Thanks for watching my Private Internet Access Review – I hope it was useful to you! I know there are tons of VPN options to choose from and although I don't think there's a "best VPN" so to speak, PIA is certainly a quality option for you.
