Lawmakers Urge Gov. Brown To Sign Net Neturality Bill

IS TAKING AIM AT A NET NEUTRALITY BILL ON GOVERNOR BROWN’S DESK. JACKIE WARD IS HERE NOW.. TO EXPLAIN WHAT THAT COULD MEAN FOR INTERNET SPEEDS IN CALIFORNIA. IF GOVERNOR BROWN SIGNS THIS BILL .. CALIFORNIA WOULD HAVE THE STRONGEST NET NEUTRALITY STANDARDS IN THE NATION. OBAMA-ERA NET NEUTRALITY RULES ENDED LAST YEAR .. WHEN THE FCC VOTED AGAINST THEM. INSTEAD, A NEW SET OF STANDARDS WAS APPROVED THAT MANY THINK WOULD HURT CONSUMERS .. BY ALLOWING SOME CONTENT TO GET BLOCKED AND SO-CALLED “FAST- TRACK” DELIVERY. STATE SENATOR SCOTT WIENER AUTHORED SENATE BILL 8-22,PASSED IN SACRAMENTO LAST MONTH, AND WOULD PREVENT INTERNET PROVIDERS FROM BLOCKING, SLOWING OR FAVORING CERTAIN WEBSITES. AJIT PAI, CHAIRMAN OF THE FCC, SAYS CALIFORNIA CAN’T SET ITS OWN RULES .. THAT HE CALLS MORE BURDENSOME THAN THE ONES ADOPTED IN 20-15. ON FRIDAY PAI SAID: “CALIFORNIA’S MICROMANAGEMENT POSES A RISK TO THE REST OF THE COUNTRY. AFTER ALL, BROADBAND IS AN INTERSTATE SERVICE; INTERNET TRAFFIC DOESN’T RECOGNIZE STATE LINES. IT FOLLOWS THAT ONLY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT CAN SET REGULATORY POLICY IN THIS AREA. FOR IF INDIVIDUAL STATES LIKE CALIFORNIA REGULATE THE INTERNET, THIS WILL DIRECTLY IMPACT CITIZENS IN OTHER STATES.” THE FCC STILL HAS TO APPROVED THIS BILL IF GOVERNOR BROWN SIGNS IT INTO LAW .. SINCE IT’S RESPONSIBLE FOR OVERSEEING INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDERS. STATE SENATOR WIENER AND DEMOCRATIC LEADER NANCY PELOSI ARE HOLDING A PRESS CONFERENCE IN SAN FRANCISCO THIS AFTERNOON .. TO URGE GOVERNOR BROWN TO SIGN THE BILL. KENNY?
