Historic Change For Internet Providers

A HISTORIC CHANGE THIS MORNING — FOR THE FIRST TIME, THE INTERNET IS NOW SUBJECT TO FEDERAL REGULATION. THE NEWS HAS PUT CONTENT PROVIDERS LIKE AMAZON, GOOGLE, AND NETFLIX UP AGAINST BIG BROADBAND COMPANIES LIKE VERIZON, AT AND T AND COMCAST. AS DON CHAMPION REPORTS, THE NEW FCC RULE IS A MILESTONE IN REGULATING HIGH-SPEED INTERNET SERVICE IN AMERICAN HOMES. THE INTERNET AS YOU’VE KNOWN IT HASN’T CHANGED – BUT BEHIND THE SCENES THE BATTLE OVER HOW YOU ACCESS IT IS FAR FROM OVER. THURSDAY, THE FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION VOTED IN FAVOR OF ‘NET NEUTRALITY’… A MOVE THAT ENSURES EQUAL INTERNET ACCESS FOR EVERYONE. THE DECISION BASICALLY RECLASSIFIES THE INTERNET AS A PUBLIC UTILITY LIKE A PHONE COMPANY… EXPERTS SAY THE RULES WILL PREVENT THE INTERNET FROM TAKING A SLOW SLIDE INTO THE CABLE TV MODEL SMALLER COMPANIES WERE CONCERNED THAT IF THEY COULDN’T AFFORD POTENTIAL FEES THERE WOULD BE SLOWER ACCESS TO THEIR SITES. NOT EVERYONE AGREES. ROBERT MCDOWELL IS A FORMER FCC CHAIRMAN. “WITHOUT RULES THE INTERNET HAS FLOURISHED BEAUTIFULLY WITHOUT THE ‘HELP’ OF GOVERNMENT WHAT IS BROKEN THAT NEEDS FIXING?” INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDERS ARE EXPECTED TO TAKE THE ISSUE TO COURT…. IT’S A FIGHT THAT COULD GO ON FOR YEARS. DON CHAMPION FOR CBS NEWS, NEW YORK. BROADBAND COMPANIES HAVE SAID THEY WILL FILE SUIT ONCE THE OFFICIAL RULES ARE RELEASED – WHICH COULD HAPPEN IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS.
