Governor Brown signs net neutrality bill

WAS INTENTIONAL. OREGON GOVERNOR KATE BROWN SIGNED OREGON’ NET NEUTRALITY BILL INTO LAW LATE THIS MORNING. KEN: KOHR HARLAN IS LIVE AT MT. TABOR MIDDLE SCHOOL WHERE THE GOVERNOR SIGNED THE MEASURE. KOHR: THE MEASURE REQUIRES STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENTS TO CONTRACT ONLY WITH INTERNET PROVIDERS THAT ABIDE BY THE PRINCIPLES OF NET NEUTRALITY. THE GOVERNOR SIGNED THE BILL INTO LAW HERE AT MT. TABOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AFTER 11:00. ESSENTIALLY IT MEANS THE STATE IS TRYING TO ENCOURAGE PROVIDERS NOT TO GIVE FAVORED TREATMENT OR FASTER INTERNET ACCESS TO WEBSITE WHO WOULD HAVE TO PAY A PREMIUM TO REACH THEIR CUSTOMERS. THE BEST EXAMPLE I CAN COME UP WITH IS NETFLIX, WHICH MAY HAVE TO PAY MORE TO STREAM MOVIES TO CUSTOMERS WHICH COULD RESULT IN HIGHER COSTS WHICH COULD GET PASSED ON TO THE CONSUMERS. GOVERNOR BROWN THIS MORNING SAYS IT IS A WAY TO KEEP THE INTERNET OPEN AND LEVEL. WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THERE IS NO PRICE TAG ON FREE SPEECH. WHILE ACCESS TO FREE INFORMATION HAS SHIFTED FROM OPENING A BOOK TO OPENING A BROWSER WE CAN NEVER EVER TAKE THAT FOR GRANTED. KOHR: THE FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION RECENTLY REVEALED THESE PRINCIPLES OF NET NEUTRALITY. THAT PROMPTED A WAVE OF STATES TO PASS SIMILAR MEASURES TO THE ONE GOVERNOR BROWN SIGNED INTO LAW TODAY, THESE NET NEUTRALITY BILLS INTO LAW. THE ISP’S MEANWHILE HAVE VOWED TO TAKE ALL OF THESE STATE LAWS BEING PASSED, BOW TO TAKE ALL OF THEM ON IN COURT. ULTIMATELY, THIS ISSUE OF OPEN
