Getting Started with Mergent Online

Welcome to this tutorial on Mergent Online This tutorial will cover how to use Mergent Online to find company research… how to find a company details and financials that you need, and what reports are available on Mergent Online. To begin, visit the Parrish Library Homepage at lib.purdue.edu/libraries/mgmt—for management. From the Parrish Library Homepage, access the List of Business Databases. Mergent is on this list. This is the homepage for Mergent Online. From here, you can do a company search by ticker or name… …or you can search by SIC or NAICS code. Mergent Online can also be used to search for private companies. However, you need to remember that private companies do not need to disclose the same financial information as public companies do. The PrivCo database is a better place to find information on private companies. We’ll do a sample search by a company name. For our example, we’ll search for Hershey, the chocolate company. You’ll notice that as we enter the ticker symbol or name of the company, Mergent will provide you with a list of companies for you to pick from Mergent defaults to showing you Company Details first. In the Company Details tab, you can find a synopsis of the company which includes a description of the company and what they do as well as key financial information about the company… the company’s business history by year… and business segments by time, scale, or type of currency. In the Company Financials Tab, you can find financials, ratios, prelims, and business analysis The Annual Balance Sheet can include 15 quarters of financial information or more. You can also find analysis or ratios like the EBITDA margin %. In the reports section, you can find annual reports for the company, as well as industry reports, equity reports, mergent reports and portraits. In the News tab, you can get recent news on the company, from the latest to the last 30 days. Coverage also includes historic news. “Now you should know how to use Mergent to find company research, how to find the company details and financials that you’re looking for, and what reports are available on Mergent Online. “If you have any further questions, contact us at [email protected]
