#EIFasks EU Commissioner Gabriel and Romanian Ambassador on the future of Digital Single Market

– Two areas where our attention will certainly be drawn after 2019. The first one is to scale up
public and private investments. We are still lagging behind
United States, Japan, China, South Korea in private research and development investment levels. Venture capital in Europe is only 1/5 of that in the United States. This cannot continue. Simply put, we do not
monetize what we invent and I would like really to see
here Europe more courageous, more dynamic and more transformative. So, that’s why definitely
our digital technologies must be more human centric. I would like to see our
technologies empowering our citizens to have a special think about our authors, about our creators, about
our creative industries. That’s something that we don’t use enough, that’s my personal conviction. This is why I’m so deeply convinced that the only way forward is to build a digital society based on our strengths and
our fundamental values. – Digital is an important component of the Romanian Presidency priorities. We will focus our work on innovation, cyber security, e-skills as well as women in tech. Digital women I would say. We want to have a substantial contribution to Europe’s digital transformation to the benefit of citizens and business but also to bridge the gaps, the EU digital investment
gaps in some of our areas, mainly in the rural areas. We are paying a particular attention to the initiative in the area
of Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity as they change and
contribute to a stronger, modern and trustful digital Europe. Another important topic is the preparation of strategic agenda and data, not only the access to data but also the protection and take into consideration all the sensitivities mentioned
before by our Commissioner will be discussed when we are preparing, start to prepare the strategic
agenda for our future.
