DWYM: Websites worry loss of neutrality would slow them down

TODAY WAS A DAY OF ACTION FOR NET NEUTRALITY.BUT IF YOU’RE LIKE MOST PEOPLE, YOU PROBABLY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THIS BIG INTERNET CONTROVERSY IS ABOUT, OR WHY YOU SHOULD CARE.SO WE TRIED TO EXPLAIN IT IN TERMS A THIRD GRADER MIGHT UNDERSTAND IT’S TOUGH TO PRONOUNCE….T OUGHER TO UNDERSTAND. UNDERSTAND.”Have you ever heard of Net Neutrality? No. Have you ever heard of Net Neutrality? No sir, I have never heard of Net Neutrality.” ONLY A HANDFUL OF PEOPLE IN THIS DOWNTOWN LUNCH CROWD HAD HEARD THE TERM. TERM.”I honestly dont know what it is all about, but I have heard of it.”BUT MILLIONS OF AMERICANS HAVE JUST HAD A PRIMER….AS MAJOR WEBSITES RAN BANNER ADS ON A “DAY OF ACTION” FOR NET NEUTRALITY. REDDIT EVEN PUT UP AN ANNOYING POPUP PRINTOUT, SHOWING HOW ROLLING BACK NEUTRALITY MIGHT SLOW DOWN ITS SITE. SITE.LET’S THINK OF THIS IN TERMS OF RESTAURANT NEUTRALITY. RIGHT NOW YOU CAN EAT LUNCH AT PANERA…OR YOU CAN EAT AT CHIPOTLE.BUT IF THE CITY DECIDED TO END NEUTRALITY, IT COULD MAKE IT TOUGHER FOR CHIPOTLE CUSTOMERS TO GET SERVED.———-SOMEONE COULD DECIDE TO LOCK THE DOORS TO CHIPOTLE EVERY FEW MINUTES…..WHILE KEEPING THE DOORS TO PANERA WIDE OPEN ALL THE TIME!WEBSITES FROM AIRBNB TO VIMEO WORRY THAT WITH THE LOSS OF NEUTRALITY, THEY COULD BE THROTTLED — SLOWED DOWN — WHILE SLICK WEBSITES FROM BIG PAYING CORPORATIONS LOAD FASTER.BUT INTERNET PROVIDERS LIKE AT&T AND VERIZON SUPPORT THE PLANNED CHANGE, SAYING IT WOULD “ROLL BACK BURDENSOME REGULATIONS.”CONSUMERS WE SPOKE WITH SAID THEY WANT THE INTERNET TO REMAIN FREE AND OPEN TO ALL. ALL.”Since I know the definition of it now, yeah everyone has the right to the internet I believe.”JUST LIKE EVERYONE SHOULD BE ABLE TO EAT AT CHIPOTLE OR PANERA. INTERNET PROVIDERS SAY THE FEARS OF THROTTLING ARE OVERBLOWN.WHATEVER THE TRUTH…AT LEAST YOU KNOW KNOW WHAT IT IS.

  1. I keep getting emails from various groups that are very serious about protecting net neutrality. I've already signed the petition that they keep asking me to sign. I know that this is very important, but it would've helped me if they would just send one email all together instead of separately emailing me to sign the same petition.

However, restrictions on the access to various websites is like restricting freedom of speech and the press.
